Local Approach of the Charpy Test at Low Temperature
نویسندگان
چکیده
Charpy V-notch impact testing is widely used in the toughness assessment of large forged components, e.g. the pressure vessel for pressurised water reactors m). At low temperature, A508 C1.3 nuclear pressure vessel steel fails by cleavage fracture. The results reported here are part of both an experimental program and numerical investigations which aim at the establishment of a non-empirical relationship between the lower shelf Charpy Vnotch energy, CVN, and the fracture toughness, K, of this material. Here, the applicability of the Beremin cleavage fracture model to the Charpy specimen is demonstrated.

Certification of NIST Room Temperature Low-Energy and High-Energy Charpy Verification Specimens.
The possibility for NIST to certify Charpy reference specimens for testing at room temperature (21 °C ± 1 °C) instead of -40 °C was investigated by performing 130 room-temperature tests from five low-energy and four high-energy lots of steel on the three master Charpy machines located in Boulder, CO. The statistical analyses performed show that in most cases the variability of results (i.e., th...
متن کاملNeural Network Analysis of Charpy Transition Temperature of Irradiated Low - activation Martensitic Steels
We have constructed a Bayesian neural network model that predicts the change, due to neutron irradiation, of the Charpy ductile-brittle transition temperature (ΔDBTT) of low activation martensitic steels given a 40-dimensional set of data from the literature. The irradiation doses were < 100 displacements per atom (dpa). Results show the high significance of irradiation temperature and (dpa) in...
متن کاملThe Susceptibility of Local Parameters to Steel Microstructure Evaluated Using Charpy Type Specimen
Accepting the Beremin approach to the analysis of cleavage failure criteria the local fracture parameters have been calculated using FEM for Charpy type specimen. Two types, of model fenitic microstructures have been selected for presentation differing by carbide thickness and scatter of fracture toughness data. For the microstructures investigated the Weibull stresses (location parameters) wer...
متن کاملImpact Toughness Modification of NIST Low-Energy Charpy Verification Specimens for Testing at Room Temperature
The possibility for the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) to certify Charpy reference specimens for testing at room temperature (21 °C ± 1 °C) instead of −40 °C was investigated in a previous study, in which a slightly increased likelihood of specimen jamming was observed at the low-energy level (13 J to 20 J). Moreover, there is a concern that the higher impact toughness o...
متن کاملExperimental Assessment of the Equivalent Strain Rate for an Instrumented Charpy Test
Instrumented Charpy test data can be used to obtain estimates of dynamic yield strength, by means of a well-established relationship published by W. Server in 1978. A fundamental issue in comparing measured dynamic tensile properties and Charpy-based estimations is establishing the equivalent uniaxial strain rate for an instrumented Charpy test, typically conducted at ≈ 5.5 m/s. In this investi...
